Nothing we write can quite prepare you for the experience that is Scalpay. As you approach the island by private boat a feeling of tranquillity and peace starts to envelope you and a stillness starts to sooth away the effects of a hectic life. Everybody, from couples wanting a romantic get away experience to families who would like the safety and quality of the holiday this island offers, all will enjoy this unique place. If you are lucky dolphins will greet you as you journey across the water and you will catch your first glimpse of your holiday home, Keepers Cottage, with its own private shingle beach and rock pools. This privately owned island is situated in the stretch of water between the Isle of Skye and the Applecross Peninsula on the west coast of Scotland with magnificent views over to Skye, Raasay and the mainland. There are no roads on the island and with some 200 acres of mixed and coniferous woodland, many freshwater lochs and burns to fish, open hills rise from the sea to 1198 ft and more than 14 miles of shoreline mostly consisting of rock pools and pebbles with a small sandy beach at low and mid tides on the far side of the island, this tranquil location is the perfect place to experience wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. With only 5 houses on the island with no vehicles (except 2 tractors, a quad bike and ancient Suzuki jeep to convey your luggage) peace and tranquillity is ensured. To quote the visitors book ‘the islands’ owners are both embracing but understated.’ Vegetables grown in the walled garden are seasonally available to purchase and extra touches like a vase of wild flowers to welcome you often found. Nick the boat man offers boat trips and fishing tips if required. Most visitors don't leave the Isle of Scalpay during their stay and are happy to spend their holiday walking, bird-watching, swimming, enjoying picnics by the sea and generally relaxing in total peace and quiet. However the Isle of Skye is easily visited (pay boatman directly) and there are lots of things to do and see on the island - castles, music festivals, local arts and crafts, and climbing and walking in the Cuillins. You can arrange to be picked up by boat from Scalpay to go on a sealife adventure, and hopefully spot a whale or a school of dolphins. Skye has some internationally famous restaurants including Lady Claire Macdonald's Kinloch Lodge and the Three Chimneys. All this coupled with the high standard of the cottages with the obvious attention to detail that has been paid in preparing them for your visit makes this a very special holiday destination. Right on the beach in a superb position just 20 metres from the sea, The Keepers is a classic cottage which has just been refurbished (Finished April 2007) to the highest standards offering a stunning but relaxed and comfortable home-away-from-home feel. The layout of the cottage provides thoughtful accommodation allowing guests to enjoy the private beach, garden and views to maximum effect. The cottage has plenty of traditional character, with pine beams and a roaring wood burning stove. The wonderful sea facing conservatory offers a perfect opportunity to relax, sip wine and watch the evening sun turn the hills majestic red. Set on a point overlooking the sea towards Applecross and the mainland, the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye. The cottage is reached by track from the main house (approx 1/3rd of mile). |
